Manage diabetes with home care
November is diabetes awareness month. In the United States, 30.3 million people have diabetes. Diabetes occurs when a person’s body can’t produce enough insulin or use it properly. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) is a great place to educate yourself. In addition to advice on lowering your diabetes risk, there are diabetes-friendly recipes and fitness ideas.
Our seniors are at an increased risk for diabetes. According to the ADA, in the United States about one in four people over the age of 60 has diabetes.
Elderly people with diabetes experience more isolation, less support, and more feeling of hopelessness.
While there is no cure for diabetes, it is manageable. Managing diabetes is a balance between medicine, exercise and eating the right food.
Seniors with diabetes are at a greater risk to forget their medication and to forget to eat a regular meal. Not managing diabetes correctly can increase problems for seniors by creating more health issues.
A problem directly associated with not managing blood sugar is the increase of falls associated with low blood sugar. Falls can cause mobility issues that will decrease the quality of life in an elderly person.
